Starting in Whitehorse, we travel on to the South Klondike Highway where the mountains rise as we approach Carcross and the Southern Lakes region – which is well-know as the photographer’s paradise. We visit the smallest desert in the world - the Carcross desert - and we visit Carcross, a charming lakeshore village teeming with First Nations and gold-rush history. On a hiking tour on scenic trails we will be overlooking the grand Southern Lakes. This region is nowadays the final stop for the White Pass Railway. Of course we will also admire Emerald Lake, called „Rainbow Lake” by the locals due to its sensational coloration.

A Full Day
Your first major stop is the historic village of Carcross, nestled on the shores of Lake Bennett. This tiny community, home to the Carcross/Tagish First Nation, feels like stepping back in time. Wander through Carcross Commons and the heritage-rich streets, where traditional carvings, totem poles, and artisan workshops reflect centuries of Indigenous art and storytelling. Don’t miss the chance to see the Carcross Desert, the world’s smallest “desert,” its dunes surrounded by verdant forests and mountain silhouettes — a unique Yukon landscape unlike anywhere else in Canada.
As you continue southward, the road hugs beautiful lakes and rivers before arriving in Teslin, a vibrant Tlingit community perched on the shores of peaceful Teslin Lake. Here, the Teslin Tlingit Heritage Centre offers a window into the life and traditions of the Inland Tlingit people. Explore the exhibits, learn about clan histories, see traditional crafts, and hear stories passed down through generations — an authentic cultural experience that enriches your understanding of the land and its people.
Throughout the day, your guide brings the journey alive with insights into Yukon history, Indigenous culture, and the natural world around you. Pause for photo stops at scenic overlooks, enjoy lunch with local flavours, and take time to savour the tranquility of the Southern Lakes. By the time you return to Whitehorse in the late afternoon, you’ll carry with you not just images of breathtaking scenery, but a deeper connection to one of Canada’s most fascinating regions.
